Lula Pilar is a singer-songwriter, born and raised in Nyack, NY, and currently based in Brooklyn. She’s been writing music since she could put words together, and is steadfast in her commitment to storytelling through song. Her sound lies at the intersection of jazz and indie pop, inspired by artists like Leith Ross, Amy Winehouse, and Eloise, but she believes “genre” is overrated. Her approach to songwriting leans on Joni Mitchell’s idea of “chords of inquiry,” with tension and resolve at the core of each investigative narrative. Lula’s writing style emphasizes lyrical twists and emotional intent, and her goal is to create music that leaves the listener feeling something new.

About Me

Lula comes from a musical family whose non-mainstream sensibilities have shaped her sound since the womb. Trained in voice and classical piano, and self-taught on guitar and ukulele, she’s been performing on stage since she was five. Her artistry evolved throughout high school, with an invitation to attend GRAMMY Camp at USC’s Thornton School of Music; a merit award from YoungArts; and the Edward Hopper House Scholarship for Artistic Curiosity.

Drawn to explore the bidirectional influence of art and society, Lula studied music and sociology at Yale University (Class of 2025). In addition to fronting her pop band Aces Bridge Club, Lula developed her solo repertoire—as featured in her performance on “Tiny Dorms,” a Yale-ified version of NPR’s “Tiny Desk,” and as an invited guest on WYBC Yale Radio. Her debut single, “Evelyn Hugo,” and her follow-up EP, Year One, were recorded and produced by Greg Talenfeld at OK Records, and released in 2023. These six tracks are anchored by Lula’s rich vocals and complex sense of harmony, immersing listeners in winding melodies, nature metaphors, and all things bittersweet. She hopes you enjoy what she’s released so far, and stick around for what’s to come.
